Anyone charged with a misdemeanor or felony (as of January 1, 2021 with certain serious crime exceptions) who is a client of a regional center for the developmentally disabled established under the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act is eligible for diversion of their criminal case.

Diversion means that if you complete counseling through the regional center you will avoid jail time and the offense will never appear on your record. See Penal Code section 1001.20 et seq.
